How I Create My Window Family

STEP 1- Open New Family Page
To create a new family file, you will need to open a new Revit page and in the main page under Families> New > US Metric > Metric Window. This is to open the Window family template and you can edit your window there.

STEP 2- Wall Opening Height
For me, before I start constructing the window, I head on to the 3D View> Modify Tab> Family Types> Edit Height & Width to have a higher and bigger window opening space.

STEP 3- Reference Plane
Next, open the elevation view > Reference Plane > create 4 lines according to the window opening that was already provided.

STEP 4- Aligned & Label
Assign parameter>Â select all the parameter> New> Name it as Frame Width

STEP 5- Extrusion
Next, go to Create>Extrusion> back to Create> Reference Plane. For this process, It is to indicate the window frame pattern/ mullions. For me, I created 4 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines. Then, use Aligned to indicate the distance for each reference line that was created and switch on EQ so that the distance between each lines are equal.

STEP 5- Create Mullions
To continue this process, go to Extrusion> Select the Pick Lines tool and offset ( for me I offset around 30mm for now) to sketch out the mullions by following the reference line that was created previously. Select the reference line and create a line at left and ride of the reference line ( Vertical ). Up and down for the ( Horizontal ) reference line.

STEP 6- Trim Extra Lines
Use the Trim tool to fix the exit lines> Tools> Rectangle tool ( to create the outer frame shape)> lock all 4 sides> click the green tick once done.

STEP 7-Frame Produced
This is what it looks like now and to modify the depth of the frame, look for the Depth bar at the top right side of the screen an key in any parameters you want.

STEP 8- Create Glass panels
To create the glass, go to Create> Extrusion> Rectangle tool> Trace over the extrusion lines that was created > Lock all four sides of the rectangle.

STEP 9- Insert materials
Next, to create the glass material, select the extrusion for the glass that was created and go to Properties> Materials & Finishes> Select Glass> Apply.

STEP 10- A glass window has been created
Its ready to load in the project.
